چکیده

Adsorption is a well known effective technology for water treatment. Although limited capacities of adsorbents and regeneration issues are two common challenges. This study proposed tested innovative approaches improving adsorption/desorption biochar made from macadamia nutshell (MBC). These capacitive deionization (CDI) degaussing (full process detailed in methods), the respective enhancement adsorption desorption MBC. Nitrate was used as model contaminant. It found that CDI could extend saturation time MBC by increasing bed specific throughput 10 fold. Modeling breakthrough curves showed modified dose-response fits experimental data. The with deionized backwash compared conventional tap backwash. Degaussing increased maximum nitrate recovery 50% to 73%. In comparison, 23%. improvement holds only first 60 min. obtained charge efficiency MBC-CDI slightly higher than literature values same applied voltage (78,6%). system also proven be efficient energy consumption 43,7 J/mmol NO3?. possible mechanism behind removal static charges on ion hydration. regenerated fresh exhibited better cycles.

Energy breakdown in capacitive deionization.

We explored the energy loss mechanisms in capacitive deionization (CDI). We hypothesize that resistive and parasitic losses are two main sources of energy losses. We measured contribution from each loss mechanism in water desalination with constant current (CC) charge/discharge cycling. Resistive energy loss is expected to dominate in high current charging cases, as it increases approximately l...

A Comparative Study between Membrane Capacitive Deionization and Capacitive Deionization from Isotherms and Kinetics

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is a promising technique to achieve the desalination. This novel technique can largely improve the desalination efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) by introducing ion-exchange membranes into CDI. This paper presents a comparative study on the electrosorptive performances of CDI and MCDI based on single walled carbon nanotubes electrodes in NaCl so...

Effective Modified Carbon Nanofibers as Electrodes for Capacitive Deionization Process

Carbon materials have the advantages of good electrical conductivity and excellent chemical stability, so many carbon materials have been introduced as electrodes for the capacitive deionization (CDI) process. Due to the low surface area compared to the other nanocarbonaceous materials, CNFs performance as electrode in the CDI units is comparatively low. This problem has been overcome by prepar...

Two-Dimensional Porous Electrode Model for Capacitive Deionization

Ion transport in porous conductive materials is of great importance in a variety of electrochemical systems including batteries and supercapacitors. We here analyze the coupling of flow and charge transport and charge capacitance in capacitive deionization (CDI). In CDI, a pair of porous carbon electrodes is employed to electrostatically retain and remove ionic species from aqueous solutions. W...

Attractive forces in microporous carbon electrodes for capacitive deionization

The recently developed modified Donnan (mD) model provides a simple and useful description of the electrical double layer in microporous carbon electrodes, suitable for incorporation in porous electrode theory. By postulating an attractive excess chemical potential for each ion in the micropores that is inversely proportional to the total ion concentration, we show that experimental data for ca...
